Mass Incarceration - Jim Crow Era of Mass Incarceration
Mass Incarceration - Jim Crow Era of Mass IncarcerationThe new era of Jim Crow is alive and well in our country, and I think the Jim Crow era was pretty much over before it began, but I also think that, now, this new era of mass incarceration is here to stay and will live on long after we're all dead. But, instead of just writing about Jim Crow, or 'The South' as a whole, I decided to write about the Jim Crow era of mass incarceration, and try to touch on the topic at some length.Since so many of my people are in prison for something I don't know about, I figure I should find out and share my knowledge with you as well. I believe that I can still make a difference, however small, by helping others. In this case, I have just gotten out of prison. That has changed my whole perspective on what I've learned from my book.I guess it was rather easy for me to realize that Jim Crow was not as widespread as mass incarceration. But, until now, I don't really know how widespread it really was, or the significance of the issue to so many in this country. Especially, since many of those people were still in prison for something they didn't do.After all, Jim Crow laws only went so far. With Jim Crow, the president of the United States, at least publicly endorsed them and told black folks what their job was supposed to be. With mass incarceration, most of the politicians, not the president, however the politicians did go after someone they thought was a criminal and put them in prison, so everyone would think that he was a criminal, and he or she was a criminal.I have to admit, I get kind of irritated with all the old school romantic view of the American people and of ourselves. One of the things that got me worked up the most was when the local TV news would run an exposé on some 'snitch', and some local 'hero' would come out and 'save the day'. Of course, the 'hero' was the one who ended up in jail, not the 'snitch'.I don't know if you've ever seen the movie, but there's a part where Jim Crow gets out of prison, and he walks down the street and people still don't know how he got there. They don't know where he came from, he walks down the street, goes past all these people, and they're all smiling, and they know he was just 'Joe Blow', and didn't deserve to be locked up, or hurt because some neighborhood kids didn't like him.I get a little tired of this whole new era of living, and I think that something is wrong. I'm going to keep learning about the new era of mass incarceration, because, at the end of the day, is it just something that happens to you, or to anyone? You, yourself, can help change the situation. So, I'll keep telling you about the Jim Crow era of mass incarceration, but I may change my writing style a little, because this latest period of time I've been in, with the so-called 'war on drugs', is just ridiculous. I feel the same way as most people, and I don't want to see any more young men and women getting killed on the streets, becau se they were caught up in this new era of mass incarceration. You should too.
